Computers, the Good, the Bad and the Irrelevant
I’m starting a new section about the electronic part of our offices, the computer. In it I’ll talk about chips, software, and all the related equipment. From time to time I’ll discuss the companies that are building any of them. Office tech has become the single crucial component for every business. Big businesses, medium sized businesses and even home offices all use computers. And, the size of their difficulties have nothing to do with their business size.
The reason for this new section is because no matter what I do for any company, I always seem to get involved in their computers. As you may know, my primary activity is marketing communications. I work on a mostly virtual basis with every client. That means that almost all my communications happen over the phone or the internet. When I send a file containing the latest press release, new logo design, finished catalog or retouched photo, if they can’t see it they can’t approve it. So, I end up helping them solve the computer problem. After solving a couple of problems, they often seek my advice on new equipment or software purchases. I have even gone on the road to work with information technology departments on behalf of administrative or marketing departments.
Years ago, I used to build custom network servers and graphic workstations for a couple of clients. I’ve wired networks in old buildings…never again. I’ve even gone into clients’ homes to configure their software to let them access the office accounting software from their recliner. Now, when I get involved with other people’s computers it’s because of necessity but it’s still fun.
If you have a question about computers or software or even about the internet, just click the "Feedback" at the top of this page and ask away. I’ll try to get you an answer that you can use.
